Why Can’t We Sleep When We’re Exhausted? The Ancient Alert System That Keeps the Brain Awake

You worked all day.

Your body feels heavy. Your eyes are tired.

“This should be an easy night to fall asleep,” you think as you get into bed.

But sleep does not come.

Tomorrow’s work. Something someone said earlier. An email you have yet to answer. The plans ahead.

Thoughts that barely bothered you during the day begin to surface, one after another, in the dark.

Your body is exhausted.

Yet your mind seems unwilling to sleep.

Does this mean you simply are not tired enough?

When it comes to human sleep, being tired and being able to fall asleep are not always the same thing.

Part of the explanation lies in an ancient human capacity: arousal, the state of being alert and responsive to what is happening around us.

Fatigue and Alertness Can Exist at the Same Time

We often imagine a simple sequence:

Get tired.
Feel sleepy.
Fall asleep.

But sleep does not always follow that path.

Researchers studying insomnia use the concept of hyperarousal to examine why someone may remain alert even when physically tired.

Hyperarousal can involve several overlapping processes. The body may show signs of heightened physiological activity. The brain may remain active. Thoughts and emotions, including worry and persistent thinking, may also keep a person mentally engaged.

In other words, a tired body and an alert mind can coexist.

That tension is one of the most revealing features of human sleep.

Alertness Is There for a Reason

Why do we have a system capable of keeping us awake when we are tired?

Imagine a time before secure homes, locks, and electric lights.

The darkness could contain real danger. Falling asleep simply because the body was exhausted would not always have been helpful for survival.

Human beings therefore developed ways to remain alert in response to their surroundings, even when the need for sleep was strong.

Alertness itself is a necessary ability.

Modern insomnia research also examines how stress affects this system. People differ in their sleep reactivity: how readily their sleep is disturbed by stressful experiences. Worry and repeated thinking may play a role in that response.

The challenge is that the kinds of threats we face have changed.

Modern Life Keeps Us Awake Without a Predator Outside

For most of us, there is no dangerous animal waiting outside the house at night.

But the brain still has a great deal to process.

Work. Relationships. Money. Social media. News. Notifications. Uncertainty about the future.

Even after we put down the phone, the thoughts may continue:

“Will tomorrow’s meeting go well?”

“Did my reply sound wrong?”

A stressor does not have to be a physical danger directly in front of us. Sometimes a thought alone is enough to sustain a sense of alertness.

Researchers have studied this cognitive and emotional side of hyperarousal, including worry and thoughts that keep circling back.

Your body is in bed. The room is safe.

Yet your mind may still be acting as though it is not time to let its guard down.

The Pressure to Sleep Can Make Sleep Harder

Then another curious thing happens.

You look at the clock.

1:00 a.m.

“Only six hours left.”

You check again.

2:00 a.m.

“This is going to affect my work tomorrow.”

Now sleep itself has become a task.

Research on insomnia has linked worry and repeated thinking about sleep with heightened arousal. The stronger the desire to fall asleep becomes, the easier it is for another worry to appear:

“What if I can’t sleep?”

You went to bed to rest. Gradually, the bed can become a place where you monitor whether sleep is happening.

The body has a somewhat ironic way of responding to pressure.

Why Does Stress Affect Some People’s Sleep More Than Others?

One person sleeps soundly before an important presentation. Another lies awake before a relatively ordinary appointment.

Research suggests that sleep reactivity varies between individuals. Genetic factors, family history, environmental stress, and other influences may all contribute.

This is not simply a matter of being mentally “strong” or “weak.”

Human beings do not all respond to stress in precisely the same way.

Our Bodies Are Older Than Modern Society

Our surroundings have changed at extraordinary speed.

We have electric light. Work can continue around the clock. Information arrives from across the world. We can shop at night and answer work messages from bed.

The human body has not changed at the same pace.

We live in a highly modern society with bodies shaped by a much longer history.

Perhaps, then, we do not need to interpret “I’m exhausted, but I can’t sleep” as a simple failure of the body.

The body may have its own reasons for remaining alert.

Understanding Health Through the Body’s Mechanisms

Health information often offers direct answers:

“Eat this.”

“Sleep for this many hours.”

“Do this to stay healthy.”

Some of that advice is useful. At NEOTERRAIN, we also want to ask a question that comes before it:

Why does the human body work this way?

Sleep. Appetite. Movement. Stress. Ageing. Memory. Body temperature. Pain.

The body we live with every day still contains mechanisms we do not fully understand.

Perhaps understanding health begins not only with trying to make the body do the “right” thing, but also with learning what kind of living creature we are.

The next time you cannot sleep, you may see that night a little differently.

Your body is tired.

Somewhere in your mind, though, a part of you may still be watching the world.

The human body carries a longer history than we tend to remember.
